Cookie Swap/Knitting Luncheon

The Chicks with Sticks knitting group gathered at my home for our anual Cookie Swap/Knitting Luncheon. This is always one of my favorite parties to host during the holidays. We swapped gifts to the tune of "The Right Family" read by me. Now these girls can knit up a storm, but it was quite hard for them to pass a gift to the right, I mean left. Did you get the right gift?

My daughter Annie comes home from school and said, "Mom I volunteered you to make bread for my Spanish Class". I started this bread at 6:30 p.m. last night and finished this morning at 1:00 a.m. She is such a joy in my life.
Recipe: Bread of the Dead

Special sweet loaves called panes de muerto are prepared for this day to please the living and the dead. They represent "souls" of the departed. They are oval or round and have raised skulls and crossbones. The consumption of this bread recalls the taking of bread in Communion.

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tblsp anise seed
2 pkgs dry yeast

Combine and heat in saucepan
1/2 milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup margarine

Set aside for later use
4 eggs
3 1/2 cups flour

Ingredients for glaze
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup orange juice
2 tblsp grated orange peel

Mix dry ingredients, add warm liquid and beat. Add 4 eggs and 1 cup of flour and beat. Gradually blend in remaining flour. Knead on lightly floured board for 8-10 minutes. Place dough in greased bowl and let rise until doubled (1 1/2 hours). Punch dough down and make shapes. Let rise again for 1 hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Boil glaze ingredients for 2 minutes. Apply to warm shapes.

Meet Gus. Short for Augustus. He's my bad ass cat! He doesn't lounge around the house or jump in your lap for a scratch behind the ear like most cats do. Although I tried to make him a house cat, he just wouldn't have it. He's an outdoor stalker of prey. He spends most of his days and nights in the gutter. We call him Gus the Gutter Cat. If I could only get a picture of him on his throne, sunning on the gutter next to the street. If I had known he would have turned out like this, I would have named him "Rum Tum Tugger".

6 knitters and spinners took a trip to Mentone, AL for a wonderful relaxing get away to knit, spin, shop and graze. And I don't mean the picture of the sheep grazing. I meant the knitters. We all took food and boy did we eat in between all the other activities we did. I'm sorry I don't have as many pictures as Darlene but check out her post to see more.

Then I got home to a great surprise! My sweet daughter had painted me a picture to hang for Halloween. She did a wonderful job. She loves Halloween.

I was so excited to get the prize that I won yesterday in the mail. Nancy's 300 post contest . The prize that I received was this great sock yarn that I have not worked with before. Can't wait to try it. It is so soft. And she added to it a bag of 4 skeins of novelty yarn. Made me think of halloween. Thanks so much Nancy for a great contest!!

On a sadder note, I also won another contest that came yesterday too, but the envelope was empty. I had won a beaded ring and when it came, it had been tampered with. There was a hole in the side of the envelope and when I opened it, the tissue also had a hole in it too. So, someone had to have felt through the evelope that is was a ring and made them a little entrance and pulled it out. It is so sad that we can't even trust our postal service.

I started this yesterday and finished today. I just can't drag myself away from that wheel. Two months ago when I got my wheel, I said I'll never be able to do this. I was wrong. I love it so much, I'm waking up in the middle of the night to spin.

A Nice Suprise to beat the Winter Doldrums

What a nice suprise to come home from a hard day at work and find a package in your mailbox. My partner came through with some great goodies. Three beautiful dish rags, 2 skeins of cotton yarn, green tea (yum), a rose flavor bar of soap, a great little book that holds note pads that will come in handy and a sweet Bread for Life bracelet from my partner Grace. Thank you so very much. I love it all.

A Fun Night Out

This is what I along with about 70 other people painted last night at a fun place to go, SipsnStrokes

Three of my friends and myself (hated I forgot my camera) decided we wanted to try this out. We went to the South Side location. You take a bottle of wine and snacks along with $35 and come home with a master piece. I will have to admit, after seeing 70 other paintings just like this one, I wasn't so fond of this by the time we left. I will be doing some tweaking to this painting before I hang it on my wall. But it is tons of fun! Of course when I was done, I had the knitting needles out working on my sock while the others finished.

I did find out that the Trussville studio will be opening on Feb 11th. You can go to the web-site and look on their calendar to see which painting you would like to do and register on-line. Check it out.

Searching for something to spin

I ran out of roving...didn't have anything to spin...what do I do? Rummaging through all the stash like a mad woman... hot dog, found some pencil roving I had bought several years ago that I forgot about when I was doing felting. Spun that baby up. Ain't it purdy?

Then friend walks in. Oh what a friend! Not because she furnishes me with the most gorgeous gifts but because she is the most thoughtful, most wonderful person on this planet. Anyway look what she gave me. The perfect bag (this may be the best one I have so far), some roving from FatCatKnits, (needed this) a magic yarn ball from Emily Parson's Sophie's Toe (needed this too) and a cute little sock bag that is not seasonal (she got tired of seeing me carry a Halloween and Christmas sock bag; so I diffently needed this). Thanks friend!!!!!!! I Love You!!!!!!!!!

Check out this cute little bowl I ordered from the Knit Witch. I've been wanting one of these and I found her while I was in Blog Land. The feature I like about this bowl is that it has a slit along with the hole so you can remove your yarn if you need to.

My Wheel had a Baby

Look what my sweet husband and daughter gave me for my birthday! It's the stool that matches my Kromski Minstrel Wheel. I love it very much. First, I didn't think I wanted this because of comfort. Just doesn't look comfortable at all. And second, I thought my big ol' butt would hang all down the sides and back. I am pleasantly surprised that it is very comfortable. But the main reason I love it so much is that it sits me up high enough where I can actually see my bobbin where all the other chairs I tried didn't. I think I'll keep it.

This week's topic: There are many people who ADORE receiving hand-knit or crochet items; but there are just as many who have no appreciation whatever of how much love, work, and time goes into a hand-made item. Share a story of a hand-made gift you gave to someone and how it worked out - good, bad, or ugly!

I can't think of anything that I have knitted to give as a gift because I don't think I'm that good of a knitter to give as a gift. I have given crocheted dish rags though.

I do like to paint and I gave each of my knitter friends a painted ornament that falls in the knitted category.

What's on my needles

I think I'll post about knitting since this is what this blog is suppose to be about. This is currently what's on my needles. This is the new Noro Sock Yarn in a rib K2P2, size 2 circulars. I am in love with this yarn. I have heard so people say they don't like it but it knits up so easy. No splitting at all. This would be a great yarn for beginners learning to knit socks. It's not a soft yarn but I'm hoping it will come out in the wash.

Something we don't see much down south. But oh how we cherish it when it does come. One day is 70 degrees and the next day it's freezing and we wish for just a dusting of the white stuff so we can sit by the fire, drink hot chocolate and knit. The ultimate thing to do in the winter. I guess we appreciate it so very much because we don't see this but maybe every 5 years.

It's me.....something I've always wanted to do. Crawl down in a manhole.

This is not really my new job. But my new job does require that I know what cut cables and locating cables is all about. So we went on a training field trip with one of our locate companies and a field investigator to see the ins and outs of the job. What I do is go after the people that damage AT&T properties. It was a cold but fun day out in the sleet and rain.

This is my second attempt at spinning. Not much better. It's name is "Peas and Carrot Throw-up"

Now, this is a little better. My third attempt. I'm not giving up! No I'm not. Maybe I'll look back on this one day and laugh. Right now I'm a crying!

Distaff Day

Distaff Day, also called Rock Day, is 7 January, the day after the feast of the Epiphany. It is also known as Saint Distaff's Day, since it was not really a holiday at all. In many European cultural traditions, women resumed their household work after the twelve days of Christmas. The distaff, or rock, used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women's work. Often the men and women would play pranks on each other during this day, as was written by Robert Herrick in his poem "Saint Distaffs day, or the Morrow After Twelfth Day" which appears in his Hesperides.

Some modern craft groups have taken up the celebration of Distaff day as part of their new years celebration.

And that is just what this group of women did. We gathered for a day of spinning and what a wonderful time was had by all.

I spent my gift certificate from Copper Moose and it came yesterday. Two beautiful colors, Dijon Merino and Harvest Merino. I think these will look good plied together. What a great way to start the new year, with some new wool to spin. But right now I'm going to cook some black eye peas and turnip greens while I sip on a little bubbly (Mimosa's).

It's almost Christmas! Today we celebrate the fourth Sunday in Advent. All the shopping is complete. Now I can sit back and relax and do a little knitting in front of the fire. All long awaited day. I swear every year it's going to be different but I guess I would have to start my shopping on Jan 1 of each year.

My Christmas sock yarn came this week from Sophie's Toes. It's so pretty!! The one on the left is called Christmas Tree and the right is Christmas Lights. I know I won't be able to finish socks by Christmas, but there is always next year. Just knowing I have this in my stash gives me that warm fuzzy feeling.

Christmas Possum

Yes indeed, we have a opossum. As I opened the door to let the dog out to do his business this morning on his "TT" pad in the garage because it was too cold for a walk, I noticed things were knocked over on the floor. I went into the garage and found that golf balls were scattered all around. I turned around and there sat the biggest possum in a chair that I have ever seen in my life. I let out a scream and ran in the house. I told my husband to come look at this. My husband had just said a few days ago he thought we had a opossum because the cat food bag had a hole in it. He tried to run him off but he just creeped further into the back of the garage. I was trying to take his picture but couldn't get a good one. After my husband left, I shut the garage door and tried to get him to come to the front of the garage with some cat food.
My son-n-law stopped by today around lunch time because he was working a claim case in our neighborhood. I ask him are we covered by State Farm for possum damage? I told him there is one in our garage. He immediately started walking to the back door and I said, don't run him off until I get a picture. After all the snarling and hissing, I finally got the picture and Mike said, "Do you think your Alfa agent would have done this for you? He's gone now but I think he will probably be back tonight. Needless to say, all the cat food is in the house. No more goodies for him.

He or she has got some pretty fur, but I draw the line on spinning opossum fur.

Alabama Knitter's Ornament Swap

My package came today from the "beloved mail man". What a great box of goodies. I had already tore into the box and was wolfing down some wonderful chocolates when I suddenly thought, I didn't make a picture to put on my blog. See that cute little round box? It DID have

some chocolate in it. It was soooo good!!!!!!! Also inside are some teas, coffee, hot chocolate, a Christmas mug and my favorite, a pack of Swankie hankies (love the name). I'm always needing a tissue in church. Now I have my very own Christmas designer tissues. I had completely forgot about the ornament because I was so excited about the chocolate. She said in her note that the ornament was coming later. Wanted me to have the goodies while they were fresh. Thanks so much CSW-Alabama Knitter. I truely

Thanksgiving 2007

Thanksgiving, a day to be thankful for our many blessings. I love this day because it reminds me of what I am so very thankful for. A wonderful loving family, friendships that I cherish and a merciful God that loves me.

We celebrated Thanksgiving Day with my beautiful daughter Heather and her husband Mike at their house with Mike's family. We have been doing this for the past 5 years. We love Mike's family very much and enjoy seeing them each year.

Veterans Day Celebration - Hewitt Trussville Middle School

I'm especially proud of this veteran. This is my husband John Cole. He was one of the key note speakers at the Hewitt Trussville Middle School Anual Veterans Day Celebration on Friday. He served with the First Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam as an infantryman from January 1968 to December 1968. During his tour of duty in Vietnam he made over 50 combat air assaults and participated in five major campaigns. At the Battle of Hue his unit was awarded the "Presidential Unit Citation", the highest unit decoration awarded in the military, and was the subject of a book titled "The Lost Battalion". His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, three Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with "V" device, vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star and the Presidential Unit Citation.

He was asked to speak at this years celebration because our daughter did her "Interview a Veteran" paper last year in the 7th grade on her dad which included the book "The Lost Battalion".

I would like to take time to give honor to all the veterans who fought and died for this country that I live in. I cannot express the appreciation enough that I have for their dedication and noble service. God bless each and every veteran from the bottom of my heart.

A fact that you might find interesting:

If you took the American Flag and applied all the men and women that have died for this country from the Revolutionary War to today, to the 50 stars, they would represent over 26,000 for each star.

Think of this the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

Yarn Cake, that it. I rolled some yarn cakes today. From left; Tapestry (Sunshine Yarn), Rooster Rocks (Blue Moon), Little Bunny Foo Foo (Blue Moon), Sea Turtle (Sunshine Yarn), and Back to School (Shopies Toes). Aren't they purty. I'd probably guess I've got about 30 more to roll.

Yes, my Spinning Wheel came this week.

Me: Well, I need to open it because there is a tear in the box and I need to make sure it's ok.

Husband: It's ok, and they will make it right if we find out something is wrong.

Me: I don't think so, we need to open it to make sure.

Husband: You are not going to open that box.

Husband went out of town on a golf trip for the weekend. My daughter and I went out to eat last night and and then to Target to buy a bird feeder since the garden is so bare. Something to do, to keep me busy. I haven't seen a freaking bird on that feeder all day!!! Sure would like to open that box?

Cleaned out the secretary in my bedroom. Threw four garbage bag away of papers and junk. I didn't realize a piece of furniture could hold this much.
